About Games That I’ve Played Recently

In this blog post I am going through what games I have been playing recently. Every game that I pick up and start to play isn’t one that I would like to write about or take a picture and show here. I do play lots of video games. I usually buy new games from time to time. I like to buy games I like to play or that are somewhat or in some way significant for me as a video game hobbyist and a player.

I have recently played a lot with my new and shiny Nintendo Switch 2. It has a lot to offer as a console. While being an expensive purchase it already has some decent games that you can play. I had to buy a memory card for Switch 2. I ended up with a memory card that has 256 GB of storage space. I had to pay something like 70 euros for the memory card alone. I also bought the controller (the updated Pro Controller 2) and that alone cost 110 euros. The console was also a bit more expensive here in Finland where I live.

I have been talking and writing about how Switch 2 doesn’t yet have so many games available. Considering this there was a tiny relief for gamers that are waiting to see some more games as the new Donkey Kong game came available last week. Earlier I said that it could be a game that I am not so interested in. But you know what? I decided to give it a chance.

Donkey Kong Bananza cost me 75 euros. It is said that it takes about 17 hours to beat this game. I haven’t actually played it yet since I got it last Saturday and I also haven’t yet finished Burnout Paradise Remastered although I have already been playing it for a bit over 10 hours. I am hoping to finish it soon.

When it comes to Donkey Kong Bananza I have read some news about it. I think it offers some nice 3D environment for a player to move around as the main character accomplishing some tasks. I am not a big fan of Donkey Kong games. I have played recently Donkey Kong Country Returns HD that is actually a 2D platformer game. I also like the original Donkey Kong Country that was released for Super Nintendo aka SNES back in the golden 90s.

When it comes to Nintendo I am not as familiar with it as I am with Sega and PlayStation or even Xbox. I never had a NES or SNES as a kid. Instead I was playing with PC, Mega Drive and PS1 as young person growing up. I have later tried to correct this matter by getting first a Nintendo Wii and later a GameCube. This is something that I love – exploring something that these a bit older games still have to offer. I also like to go back to PS2 and original Xbox. I am also still playing a lot of PS3 and Xbox 360 games.

Something that I have also tried to, like, focus on are some handheld consoles and games that are released for them. I have to say that PSP and Nintendo DS seem to be the most fascinating ones when it comes to handhelds. They have lots of cheap games available and have some power to offer also. I do have a Game Boy Color. I also play some Game Boy games on an adapter to SNES. I am curious about Sega Game Gear and also Game Boy Advance games and would like to same day get to know them better.

The first Nintendo Switch might have been the push for me to get closer to Nintendo as a video game enthusiast. I wasn’t among the first ones to buy it when it was first released. I did decide to buy Switch Lite as it was cheaper than the regular version of Switch. Nintendo has so many great consoles. I think Super Mario Bros was a real breakthrough as a video game. Nintendo has been there for so long. We have so much to thank them for. So, I do find Nintendo’s new and also a bit older products (games and consoles) very interesting.

I have also played recently a lot with my Xbox Series X. I played Robocop Rogue City for a while. This game is very nice especially if you like Robocop movies. The game gives you a detailed view of the main character (Murphy) and it features also his partner that was with him in the first movie. It has been a while since I watched it. There is also a completely new Robocop game out there (Unfinished Business) if you find these topics interesting.

Also I have played some retro games. I have played Rayman 2 The Great Escape for some hours. It is s fun three dimensional platformer for PS1. It is a good game and if you are comparing it to the first Rayman, also released for PS1 among many other consoles and PC, it has this 3D environment as the first game is purely 2D.

I have so many consoles attached to my setup currently. Mainly I have been using my Switch 2 that actually required me to attach it directly to the TV instead of a separate HDMI switch. I have used also my Xbox Series X and my Raspberry Pi 5 that has 8 GB of RAM. These are the three devices I have mostly used for a long time already. I play my PS1 games and also some older systems games on Raspberry Pi 5 that runs emulation on Recalbox. This is just the easiest way to play these kinds of games.

As I do have many consoles attached to my television I rarely switch the HDMI connections. I mainly just select a channel from my remote controller of my television and I already have a chance to choose one of these three connected devices. If I would like to use PS3 or PS1 or any other device I would have to search for the correct option from two separate HDMI connectors. So, I have been happy using just these three devices.

What Have I Been Playing Recently

I realized yesterday that it has been already a bit over two weeks from my latest post to this blog. I have been busy with work, game designing and I have also met some friends. I have also played. Actually I have played a lot. I just haven’t had time to sit down and write about it.

Yesterday I also for the first time checked from Steam how many hours I have put in NBA 2K22. I am playing it with PC as you probably figured out from that last sentence where I mentioned Steam. I have played this game for 90 hours.  already described my progression in this game in the last post to this blog.

A while ago I stopped playing Gran Turismo 7. I played it maybe 40 hours. As you can figure I have played a lot this year already. After this I figured I should get into some driving games for PS4. I saw a nice discount so I bought Wreckfest and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered. I also got F1 2021.

Hot Pursuit is a remasterd version of the game that was released in 2010. There were also some NFS games published earlier and they were also called Hot Pursuit. The comncept here is clear. You decide which side of the law you are on. So you can choose to be a police or a racer.

I have already enjoyed playing this racing game for about 30 hours. At first I was a bit disappointed. I thought the game wasn’t realistic. Driving the same circuit for 50 times seemed very repetitive to me. And you didn’t progress much. I had played as a racer so I decided to try playing as a police.

Playing Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered as a police is very fun. You basically try to drive as fast as you can, bust some racers and utilize means like using a spike strip, helicopter or road block to capture some racers. This play mode saves my experience. As NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered is not a realistic or enjoyable as a racing game it can be a nice experience as a game.

As it figures there’s too few hours for me to play every good game, be it a racing one or not. So I haven’t even opened Wreckfest or F1 2021. I have just been too busy lately. These games aren’t even the newest ones. As my dreams of getting myself a Xbox Series X seem to fade I have started to think about expanding my Series S’s memory. I just don’t know if there’s anything good and new to play.

Picking up what to play next is very common issue for me as a gamer. Thank you for reading. I try to write some more. I have a holiday of two weeks coming soon so maybe I catch you then. Maybe a bit earlier. Let’s find out!

Some Good and Recently Released Rally Games

I started playing WRC 9 at end of last year. So it was December 2020. I had just got a new PC. This was the first game I bought. I had heard about some earlier WRC games. Let me say that this is definitely a series of games and not only one game. But I heard that one game in this series is very bad and you should not buy it. I thought that maybe it was only one bad game. You shouldn’t judge the whole series with one game.

So I read a review of WRC 9 as players often do before they buy a game. WRC 9 received a good grade. I think it was 8 out of 10. So I decided to buy it. It was a good decision. I really enjoyed the game.

I had earlier already played Dirt Rally 2.0. I was very excited about it when it was released back in 2019. I bought it just some days after it was released. I was confident that it would offer me good time. It promised to bring you a good driving experience even if you play, as I do, with only game pad instead of a driving wheel and pedals. I don’t play with wheel and pedals. I haven’t really ever got in to it. It would be a more realistic experience but I just can’t seem to learn so much of it for me to make the transition. I have actually played with game pad since I first started playing the first Gran Turismo and a bit after it Colin McRae Rally 2.0.

The latest rally game I purchased was WRC 8 for PS4. I found it in sale from a supermarket. It’s nowadays somewhat rare to find games from super markets but I made a find. It’s price was about half the price it was originally. I found it to be a very good rally game also.

So these are some latest rally games that I’ve played. They all offer a certain and good feel of driving. WRC 8 and 9 are a bit more playable and Dirt Rally 2.0 offfers a bit more realistic feel. Of course you can tweak the settings and make the game more difficult if you wish to. I am not going in to detail with this post. Dirt Rally 2.0 is designed by Codemasters. WRC is a bit younger series of rally games. Codemasters has delivered us some very good titles in the history of rally games. You probably remember Colin McRae Rally. I wrote recently about it and…you probably guessed it…it is my alltime favorite game.

So if you are looking for a good rally game here are some recommendations. We didn’t get so deep in this text. I just don’t really know how to approach this subject. I can see how developers’s algortithms work in here. At least I can figure out how the feel of driving is getting simulated. So basically your computer reads what buttons you press in which time and defines where your car is positioned and so on…it’s very complex. But my knowledge as a programmer and player, also, bring me to the point where I can actually see what goes on under the hood so to say.

All of these games are definitely more like driving simulations instead of arcade driving games that have more play ability inside. If you want to know more about games like these keep following me and you can definitely have some experience of driving a real racing or rally car. It would definitely help you. I really think there is no right or wrong. This is just some of my thinking. And…I believe the main designer that was behind the first Dirt Rally was a real expert in his field. He had a deep knowledge of games and cars.
