Herra 47 – Midsummer Festival

Herra 47 – Midsummer Festival is an adventure game inspired very much by Leisure Suit Larry. It is released for C64. You might be surprised about a new game getting released for such an old, or maybe “retro”, type of platform. The game is a new release after all. If you are interested should head to this address for more information and instructions on how to buy the game.

I got interested in this game just last Friday when I got my hands on the new Pelit magazine that is published here in my home country Finland. The magazine is released monthly. Herra 47 is produced by Vector 5 Games. The team consists of just a few people. The game takes strong influences from a comedy show from Finland from late 1980s and early 1990s. This show, called “Pulttibois”, featured this character named Herra 47. It is a character created by actor Pirkka-Pekka Petelius. You can actually find the picture of Herra 47 from this blog posts featured image. The featured image is actually a photo that I took from Pelit magazine just one moment ago.

Pirkka-Pekka Petelius is a funny Finnish and well-known comedian. He played a big role in Finnish television comedy scene and was actually one of the pioneers of Finnish television comedy scene. There was also another actor that played in this comedy series (“Pulttibois”) and his name is Aake Kalliala. Herra 47 – Midsummer Festival takes strong influences from Petelius’s character in this game.

The game is available for a price of about 7 dollars. As the platform is Commodore 64 there weren’t actually no adventure games originally released for C64 back in the day by Sierra. These adventure games that were very popular in the 1980s were based on this particular game creation engine that makes all these Sierra games feel and look like they are developed in this certain and very recognizable way. You can notice this if you have ever played games like Larry, Police Quest, King’s Quest or/and Space Quest. Since all these games used this game engine they all look a bit like each other. There was an update to this engine and it was utilized later to make more advanced adventure games by Sierra.

The idea of a game placed somewhere in fictional Finland (at least I think the game takes place in here) is totally hilarious. My imagination starts running when I think about Petelius’s character, Herra 47, running around duringĀ  mid-summer, and trying to get some female company. It is funny because mid-summer is a big happening here and almost everyone has a vacation then. So, there are lots of parties and partying going on. If you don’t head to countryside to your summer cottage you can spend your mid-summer also in the city. It is very quiet here then. It is actually a pretty calm period. Thinking about Herra 47 spending his summer days this way is very very funny.

While the game is a good game there are some considerations. The humor might be a bit rough for today’s audience. Also Pelit magazine mentioned that the storyline and all of the puzzles could have been designed a bit better. There might be a sequel coming some time and fans are of course waiting this to be something wild. I think you can enjoy the game if you like old Sierra games and especially Leisure Suit Larry. Technically the game is a definite master piece. Vector 5 Games has done a good job.

Since I am not so much into Commodore 64 and I don’t have a real C64 console this isn’t although a game that I would actually play. The game is interesting. If you are into C64 you should definitely invest a bit of your money and time to this game. I think it really deserves it. The game received a grade of 6 out of 9 (a funny joke also, knowers will know).

About Games That I’ve Played Recently

In this blog post I am going through what games I have been playing recently. Every game that I pick up and start to play isn’t one that I would like to write about or take a picture and show here. I do play lots of video games. I usually buy new games from time to time. I like to buy games I like to play or that are somewhat or in some way significant for me as a video game hobbyist and a player.

I have recently played a lot with my new and shiny Nintendo Switch 2. It has a lot to offer as a console. While being an expensive purchase it already has some decent games that you can play. I had to buy a memory card for Switch 2. I ended up with a memory card that has 256 GB of storage space. I had to pay something like 70 euros for the memory card alone. I also bought the controller (the updated Pro Controller 2) and that alone cost 110 euros. The console was also a bit more expensive here in Finland where I live.

I have been talking and writing about how Switch 2 doesn’t yet have so many games available. Considering this there was a tiny relief for gamers that are waiting to see some more games as the new Donkey Kong game came available last week. Earlier I said that it could be a game that I am not so interested in. But you know what? I decided to give it a chance.

Donkey Kong Bananza cost me 75 euros. It is said that it takes about 17 hours to beat this game. I haven’t actually played it yet since I got it last Saturday and I also haven’t yet finished Burnout Paradise Remastered although I have already been playing it for a bit over 10 hours. I am hoping to finish it soon.

When it comes to Donkey Kong Bananza I have read some news about it. I think it offers some nice 3D environment for a player to move around as the main character accomplishing some tasks. I am not a big fan of Donkey Kong games. I have played recently Donkey Kong Country Returns HD that is actually a 2D platformer game. I also like the original Donkey Kong Country that was released for Super Nintendo aka SNES back in the golden 90s.

When it comes to Nintendo I am not as familiar with it as I am with Sega and PlayStation or even Xbox. I never had a NES or SNES as a kid. Instead I was playing with PC, Mega Drive and PS1 as young person growing up. I have later tried to correct this matter by getting first a Nintendo Wii and later a GameCube. This is something that I love – exploring something that these a bit older games still have to offer. I also like to go back to PS2 and original Xbox. I am also still playing a lot of PS3 and Xbox 360 games.

Something that I have also tried to, like, focus on are some handheld consoles and games that are released for them. I have to say that PSP and Nintendo DS seem to be the most fascinating ones when it comes to handhelds. They have lots of cheap games available and have some power to offer also. I do have a Game Boy Color. I also play some Game Boy games on an adapter to SNES. I am curious about Sega Game Gear and also Game Boy Advance games and would like to same day get to know them better.

The first Nintendo Switch might have been the push for me to get closer to Nintendo as a video game enthusiast. I wasn’t among the first ones to buy it when it was first released. I did decide to buy Switch Lite as it was cheaper than the regular version of Switch. Nintendo has so many great consoles. I think Super Mario Bros was a real breakthrough as a video game. Nintendo has been there for so long. We have so much to thank them for. So, I do find Nintendo’s new and also a bit older products (games and consoles) very interesting.

I have also played recently a lot with my Xbox Series X. I played Robocop Rogue City for a while. This game is very nice especially if you like Robocop movies. The game gives you a detailed view of the main character (Murphy) and it features also his partner that was with him in the first movie. It has been a while since I watched it. There is also a completely new Robocop game out there (Unfinished Business) if you find these topics interesting.

Also I have played some retro games. I have played Rayman 2 The Great Escape for some hours. It is s fun three dimensional platformer for PS1. It is a good game and if you are comparing it to the first Rayman, also released for PS1 among many other consoles and PC, it has this 3D environment as the first game is purely 2D.

I have so many consoles attached to my setup currently. Mainly I have been using my Switch 2 that actually required me to attach it directly to the TV instead of a separate HDMI switch. I have used also my Xbox Series X and my Raspberry Pi 5 that has 8 GB of RAM. These are the three devices I have mostly used for a long time already. I play my PS1 games and also some older systems games on Raspberry Pi 5 that runs emulation on Recalbox. This is just the easiest way to play these kinds of games.

As I do have many consoles attached to my television I rarely switch the HDMI connections. I mainly just select a channel from my remote controller of my television and I already have a chance to choose one of these three connected devices. If I would like to use PS3 or PS1 or any other device I would have to search for the correct option from two separate HDMI connectors. So, I have been happy using just these three devices.

Some Notes About the New Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June 5th this year (2025). There weren’t any huge actual limitations in the availability. I think everyone that made an order in advance also received their console. There were also lots of Switch 2 consoles available in “stone foundation” shops. I had to wait some days because there was a shortage on the Pro Controller 2 that I also ordered. I made my order in 6th of June. That day was Friday and it was 14th of June when I finally actually had the console and could start the deployment of my Switch 2.

There was a better availability of the console that came with Mario Kart World bundled. So, I bought my Switch 2 with this game. There weren’t really, yet, so many options for the first game for Switch 2. There has been already some debate online on social media and also on some video and text reviews about the price being a bit high. The price for the bundled version was, here in Finland, 620 euros while the version without Mario Kart game would cost 570 euros. Here in Finland the importer decided to add a special 100 euros to the price. I haven’t heard any deeper explanations on this. After all I am happy, still, that I can at least buy this console. I am not complaining but lets just say that there was already some conversation about this.

I am aware also that you have to buy many accessories that help you to use your Switch 2. The console has already 256 GB of space for your games. You might need also a memory card. It has to be the right type of a memory card. It can cost some tens of euros. I went and bought also the new Pro Controller 2 that cost me an extra 110 euros. You can still use the old and the first Pro Controller also with Switch 2. You also might need a carrying case that costs also some tens of euros. Also every game you want to play, of course, you have to buy. There has been some discussion and a new game for Switch 2 might cost something around 80 euros. So, as you can see, this isn’t a cheap console at all and you need to invest in it quite a bit.

What’s cool about Switch 2 is that it is almost ( I think it’s like 98 percentage or even more than that) backwards compatible with Switch 1 games. When I first had ran the deployment through with my Switch 2 I started to play Mario Kart World. However the game seemed a bit boring, a bit childish and I also read that it would take only about three and a half hours to finish the game. It is a good game, but I wanted to play something else. So, I inserted the physical Switch 1 game Diablo III and played it for maybe six to seven hours. I even continued playing it the next day. I created a new character and so after these hours of playing I had a wizard in level of 28. Then I started to play some Dragon Quest III 2D HD Remake. I also plan to play some Civilization VII on my Switch 2. I haven’t had time to play it, yet.

I also already bought another game. So, I now have two actual Switch 2 games along with my collection of Switch 1 games. The other Switch 2 game is Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster. I bought it just yesterday from a super market here in Vantaa (Finland). It cost me 50 euros. Some other options were and still are, if I really want to buy a third game already for this brand new console, The Legend of Zelda games Breath of The Wild and Tears of The Kingdom that do cost around 80 euros per game. They have some improvements. One game that I thought about buying was the Sonic game (Sonic X Shadow Generations) that is available for about 50 euros also.

The screen resolution is just fine and of a good quality. You really couldn’t ask for more. In handheld mode the screen works in Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). When the console is docked you get a 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution. The handheld screen isn’t an OLED screen but I think that would have risen the consoles price even more and all the reviews that I’ve seen about this are basically saying that the screen is actually a very good one.

So, you probably got a clear picture of what I think about this new console, the Nintendo Switch 2. I told you about the games I am currently playing and what I think about the console in general. I am waiting to get my hands on some nice and new games. If you think a new console like this, take PS4 for example, it did take about a year or even a bit longer that we started to see some more games getting released. We are seeing lots of remakes but I am not going to complain about it. Lets just wait and play the games that are available. You can always play your Switch 1 games. If you are like me you have some games in your backlog that you haven’t had time to finish, yet.
